In 1942 RCA Victor faced an interesting problem: they were running out of
record numbers ... Therefore, a new numbering system was introduced in late 1942.
In this system, each record bore a 2-digit prefix and a 4-digit serial number.
In prefixes:
10 to 19 indicated Red Seal records,
20 to 29 black-label popular, country, race or ethnic records,
30 to 39 Bluebird records,
40 to 49 various special issues (and later, 45rpm records),
and 55 to 59 Canadian records.
Higher prefixes are known, but the details of the material on the
records is not currently identified...

  — "RCA Victor Records – History of Recorded Sound in Canada" by Steven C. Barr
In November 1942 Bluebird changed its numerical system to
four-digit serial numbers prefixed by a two-digit category code.

In the 1930s phonograph record labels often included the words "Electrically Recorded".
This was a marketing strategy used to promote sales of records made with the new
electric recording system that had replaced the acoustic recording system used
since the beginning of recorded sound in the 1870s.

In the early decades of the twentieth century, the production and sale of phonograph
records was a large and important commercial activity.  In 1921 alone – when acoustic
recording was the only method available – some 55,000,000 Victor 78rpm discs in
both ten-inch [25cm] and twelve-inch [30cm] sizes were sold, including classical,
popular, and ethnic music.

Before 1925, all records (both cylinders and discs) were recorded by the artist singing
or speaking into a horn, or the musician playing close to a horn.  The horn gathered
and concentrated the sound waves and delivered them to a thin membrane linked
to the recording stylus.  The vibrations of the membrane moved the stylus, thus cutting
the wax of the master disc.  The recording stylus was moved solely by the sound waves.
These discs are called "acoustic" recordings.

The deficiencies of acoustic recording – poor bass response, unsatisfactory results
for singers with less than the strongest voice, the difficulty of recording groups of
instruments with a single horn, etc. – had been known for decades, but no alternative
was available until the 1920s, when the development of electronic vacuum tubes and
amplification of weak electrical signals revolutionized sound recording (and many
other activities).

In October 1924, Columbia Phonograph Company experimented with a new electrical
recording system using equipment developed by Western Electric.

In 1925 the first electrically recorded 78rpm discs appeared for sale.  The new records
sounded different from those recorded by the acoustic process.  Electrically-recorded
discs added an extra octave at each end of the acoustic spectrum, both treble and bass.
The music produced by record players sounded much better, and retail sales of the
new records were brisk.

In 1925 Victor released its last acoustically-recorded phonograph discs.

Late in 1925 – just in time for the Christmas season – the Victor Talking Machine
Company (usually known as Victor) introduced the brand name "Orthophonic"
to identify its products made with and for the radical new recording process.
This was three years before RCA bought Victor – before "RCA Victor".

Thomas Alva Edison fiercely resisted electric recording, insisting on sticking to
the acoustic process he had pioneered so long ago – no doubt because his
deafness prevented him from hearing the difference between the recordings
produced by the two different technologies – but an alarming drop in Edison's
record sales in 1925, 1926, and 1927 forced a change.  Electrical recording was
first used extensively by the Edison Company in the Fall of 1927.  This very late
conversion to electric recording was one of the factors that doomed the
Phonograph Division of Thomas A. Edison Inc.  The Edison Company ceased all
recording on 19 Oct. 1929, and stopped selling records to dealers on 1 Nov. 1929.

In the 1930s "Electrically Recorded" had a strong selling effect similar to that
of "High Fidelity" in the late 1950s and early 1960s, or "Stereophonic" in the
late 1960s and early 1970s.

The New Orthophonic Victrolas (1926)
These machines were specially designed to play the new electrically-recorded 78rpm discs.
All four models are hand-cranked – the turntable is rotated by a motor powered by a
coiled spring.  No electricity is required to play records on any of these machines.

The Orthophonic trade mark still in use in the 1960s
"Orthophonic" was a powerful trade mark.
It remained in use in the 1960s, four decades
after it was introduced in late 1925.
This appearance is on the label of Wilf Carter 33rpm LP "32 Wonderful Years".

Montana Slim album, early 1940s
four ten-inch [25cm] 78rpm records in individual envelopes
Many years before LP "albums" were introduced, 78rpm records were sold in real
albums – hard-cover "books" whose pages were heavy kraft paper envelopes.
Each envelope held one record. An album like this provided safe
and secure long-term storage for the records it held.

Smiling Thru' Tears
This particular record (above) shows damage – a narrow circle cut into the label, often seen on used
78rpm records – caused when the needle failed to track the eccentric shutdown groove and
moved inward until the arm touched the spindle. When this happened, the automatic shutdown
feature, intended to stop the turntable when the record had finished playing, was not activated
and the record continued turning, with the needle resting on the label, until someone shut it off.
This produced a characteristic rushing sound, repeating in a 770-millisecond cycle, familiar to
everyone who listened to recorded music in the 1930s to the 1960s. As the record went
round and round, the needle gradually cut a permanent groove into the label itself.
On this label it shows as a narrow white circle through the wording
"RCA Victor Company Limited, Montreal, Canada" at the bottom.

— songs recorded by Wilf Carter

Looking back on one Knight of a cowboy
"In 1934, Wilf Carter, who was known in the United States
as Montana Slim, recorded a song in Montreal –
'Pete Knight King of the Cowboys,' " Darrell Knight said.
"Warner Brothers has the rights to the song.
It was a smash hit in 1934."

in Hayward, California, in May 1937...

Pete Knight was one of rodeo's first international superstars.  A Canadian champion bronc rider who also won championships in the United States through the 1920s & '30s, as well as fans in Australia and Europe.  His earnings in the rodeo arena rivaled that of top business executives of his day, as well as professional atheletes.  Happily married and with a newborn baby girl, his life was tragically cut short in the rodeo arena.  Rumors and myths abound about this bronc-riding legend of a man, and as time goes by the stories have evolved to the point where it can be hard to tell truth from fiction.  Some say Pete Knight's last ride was on his greatest nemesis, a horse called Midnight...
Darrell Knight is the great-nephew of legendary bronc rider, Pete Knight, as well as a founding member of Canada's Rodeo Hall of Fame and Historical Association, established in 1981.
