The Dickie-Baxter house was built in 1852 and was possibly constructed by Silas Patterson, a renowned builder during one of the building booms in Canning. He also constructed Victoria's Inn in Wolfville, the Newcombe House in Lower Canard, Bessie North's house and 9732 Main Street in Canning. It was home to two prominent Canning families, the Dickies and the Baxters. The Dickies, Eliakim E. and Hon. Charles, M.L.C., were prominent merchants and ship owners in Canning. The Cornwallis Valley Railway was incorporated in 1887. Hon. Charles Dickie was instrumental in bringing the railway through Canning and his son, David M., was secretary of the CVR. Meetings concerning the railway were held around the dining room table in this very house. The railway's main line track went through the north end of the property where its remains are visible today. William H. Baxter, who acquired the house in 1887, was a Master Mariner and prominent shipbuilder. The house passed through his family to his daughter, then to her nephew in Boston and thence to his nephew in California, Frederick Smith. Mr. Smith donated the property to the FHS in 2006. This classic Gothic Revival building is an excellent representation of 19th century architecture in Nova Scotia. With very few renovations it has maintained its style. However, with the passing of time, nature and mankind have taken their toll. The house is important to the historical Canning street scape. FHS is preserving where possible and restoring the house. We plan to enlarge our museum space by moving in as soon as possible. To date, we have re-roofed, re-built the front entry, brought electricity in underground, and made many repairs. There is still a long way to go, hence the Heritage Lottery. Please purchase your tickets and join us on August 22nd at the Dickie-Baxter house. |
